Working from home is a positive experience for most people who try it, but there is always room for improvement. In fact, one of the main advantages to working from home is the ability to control every little aspect of your day in order to maximize productiveness and enjoyment.
Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your work situation:
Use the right software
There is a huge amount of software designed to make the life of someone who’s self employed or working from home easier. There are little browser add-ons like LeechBlock, which lets you completely block unproductive websites during work hours, online services like Wunderlist, which is arguably the best to-do list in the world, and installable software like f.lux that adjusts your monitor settings optimally throughout the day to ensure maximum productivity and ergonomics. The right software can definitely give your working life a big boost!
Improve your home office
You will no doubt spend many hours in your home office, and every little thing you can improve on it will benefit your productivity. Maybe you could install better lighting so you’ll stay energized throughout the whole day, or you could spend some money on the decor to ensure you really enjoy coming into the office in the mornings. It doesn’t hurt to spend some money on a good chair either – your body will thank you for it!
Keep work and free time separate
When you finish work for the day you should be able to close up your office and “go home”, not returning until the following morning. If you have a habit of sneaking into your home office “just to check your e-mail” all the time, chances are you will burn out sooner or later. You need to be able to disconnect completely, just as you would if you’d had a regular job, or your productivity will ultimately suffer.
Plan and schedule everything
The better you are at planning and scheduling, the more productive you will be (up to a point, of course, no need to go overboard either). Even if you could technically start working anytime you want during the day, you’ll probably find that you are the most efficient if you start and finish work at roughly the same times every day. You should also make sure to plan the work for the following day before you stop working, so you can get to work immediately without getting stuck trying to figure out what to do next.
